West Midlands Police Crown Green Bowling Club

19th August 2009 - West Midlands Herald New National Champion, Detective Constable Graham Hussey (Solihull)

West Midlands police have a New National Champion in Crown green bowls. Graham Hussey a Detective based at Solihull became the UK police sport National champion. The event which was hosted by Cheshire police on 19th August,  saw 40 qualifiers from five regions compete for the title . West Midlands police were particularly well represented having seen a record number of entrants qualifying for  this event.

Graham in winning the title saw off some tough opposition, defeating  two previous national champions en route,  Andy Hinton (WMP ) 21-18 in the quarter final and Glynn Fern (Derbyshire ) 21 -12. However,  his best performance was no doubt in the final it self ,  defeating the  defending  champion Peter Cookson (also WMP) .  Peter and Graham are both established county players and in Peter's case he has not lost a game in UK police sport for three  years.   It certainly lived up to its billing and was a very close affair going  right to the wire. On the last end,  the game stood  level at 20 points  each.  Peter bowled two excellent woods on a  difficult mark leaving himself lying on to win the game, however  Graham with his final  bowl  pulled one out of the bag , delivering it inches from the jack and nestling between Pete's bowls to take the title. In bowls terms this for Pete was a  real "sick bucket job",  but fair play to Graham he held his nerve and took the title with  an outstanding performance and a worthy winner on the day.

Speaking after wards Graham said " I knew it was going to be tough and was honestly just glad to be competing let alone win the event. I am very proud both for my self and West Midland police . "It was also a very  good days bowling and socialising which is what the game is all about really"

Another  notable West Midlands performance came from  Steve Rogers based Force RPU  Park lane. Steve reached the semi final eventually  succumbing to Pete Cookson 21-15 .

Andy Hinton the current captain of the West midlands' police bowling section said. "The Force bowls section is  blessed with a host of top quality players and this has been reflected in our performances in recent years.  I am not surprised Graham won this event.  He is player out of the top drawer who performed brilliantly on the day . I am very proud of his achievement ."

15th July 2009

The regional went very well.

11 players turned up.

The 10 qualifiers are as follows:

Peter Cookson
Dave Scriven
Graham Hussey
Dave King
Nick Ellison
Lol Ellison
Steve Tate
Steve Rogers
Johnny Brookes
Andy Hinton

In view of the lack of outside Force entrants , the Chief Constables cup was played for at the same time.

Once again Dave Scriven won it for a record 7th time . He looks pretty unbeatable at the moment especially on Tally Ho . He beat Graham Hussey in the final 21 -15. Although his hardest game was against Johnny Brookes in the prelim,  Narrowly beating him 21- 19.

For the Information of All Players

As the Warwick and Worcester Team have now given themselves a life line to stay in Division 4, I am abandoning the policy of dropping the lowest scoring player from week to week and will from now on play what I think is the strongest team available.

This will be down to my personal judgement, sink or swim.
