25th September 2008: Warwick and Worcester Team Gain Promotion
Just a quick note to say fantastically well done to the Warwick and Worcester team this year for finishing 3rd in Division 5 and gaining promotion to Division 4. Here's to getting promotion to Division 3 next year!
Everyone who played, not only played well, but also played with smiles on their faces and with great dignity towards other teams and their players. You are all an absolute credit to the club.
The season was topped off with a fantastic away win at Dartmouth central on one of the best days of the year weather wise. What a shame Alan Seager could not be there to enjoy the day, but anyway, I know the win cheered Alan up tremendously. GET WELL SOON!
See you all next year folks and once again, well done!

The Chief Constable's Cup was held at Tally Ho! on Sunday the 24th August 2008 with Dave Scriven taking the trophy once again after beating Alan Seager in the final.
Scrivo beat Johnny Brookes in the first semi final with Alan Seager beating Andy Hinton in the other. A great day was enjoyed by all and a few bob was raised for the club with a 'bowl the bottle competition'.
Alan Francis was victorious in the plate competition after beating Dick Conway who reached the final and contested it well having only bowled for five weeks! Well done Dick.

West Midlands Police Crown Green Bowls Team Win National Police League
Message to the West Midlands Police Bowling Team from Andy Hinton
Dear All,
Congratulations on becoming Champions of the National Police League. I believe the last time we won it was in 2002. Although there are fewer teams in the league than there used to be, please do not think that this under values your achievement. The standard of the teams have improved in recent years due to various amalgamations which have brought in quality guest players. This, together with the addition of the Fire and Civil Service to the competition has certainly raised the bar.
Our illustrious captain Peter Cookson (who could not be with us yesterday (13.8.2008)) has asked me to pass on the following message “Absolutely brilliant. This capped off a great year for WMP. Well done to all the lads and don’t get too drunk"
Yesterday’s result was tremendous, particularly as we were short of five first choice players. To go to West Yorkshire needing to win 10 games out of 12 was a mountain to climb, yet, those players that came performed brilliantly. I am proud of you lads.
This year in particular we have used nearly all our registered players so virtually every player in the side has contributed to this success.
What makes it even sweeter is that Derbyshire, whose team consists of a fair few ringers, were pipped at the post. On our part we have not used a single ringer all season only picking players entitled to represent WMP.
All in all this has been a tremendous year for WMP crown green bowlers. We have a New National Champion in Peter Cookson, who beat Johnny Brookes in the semi final, The Plate was won by Graham Hussey, the National doubles champions again were Pete Cookson with Mick Hinton. In addition we are the Champions of National Police League.
What would really top this off is if we can go on to win the National Team Knockout round robin on 10th September. What ever happens on that day we shall have a good time celebrating our success.
Please, I ask you all, even those players that have already confirmed their availability to me verbally, to make yourselves available for the 10th September, by e mail. Naturally we will want to take as strong a team as possible there, but all available players will be considered on the day.
Once again, well done to all!
Andy Hinton.
7th August:
Thursday Team Through to the Semi Final of the Consolation Cup
For the third year running the Thursday team in the Heart of England league division 5 has managed to succeed in getting through to the semi final of the consolation cup. The draw for the quarter finals was against Ye Olde Knowle and so we had a tough game ahead of us. A division higher meant they had to give us a head start of 12 shots, but with a tricky green like Ye Olde Knowle that was not such a great gift. The match was played over two days and we won the home game by 35 shots, Colin, Ian and Brian all won to 13 and captain Juliette won to 10, this gave us a lead of 47 shots for the away game. The drive to Ye Old Knowle on Friday was a drive of excitement and tension, all teams members had a target of 10 to win the game, no pressure !! Michelle won her game 21-17 and John lost to ten, these scores meant that the last two players on, Rita and Ray only needed to score two shots between them so after the first two ends we celebrated our win, Rita lost to 17 and Ray lost to 12.
Well done to the team !
Juliette (Team Captain)
Chief Constable's Cup
The Chief Constables Cup will now take place on Sunday the 24th of August 2008 (NOT Sunday the 3rd of August 2008) at Tally Ho! Sports and Conference Centre, Pershore Road, Edgbaston.

The competition will start at 10.30am, with a break for lunch and the final being played after the lunch break. A ‘plate’ competition will also take place and a ‘bowl the bottle’ competition.
Let’s make it a good turnout and a great day out!
Sponsorship Letter for The Planned Youth Academy
Have a look at the letter recently sent to Mr Randy Lerner at Aston Villa Football Club in an effort to raise some funds for the youth academy which we plan to commence in 2009:
Letter Dated 10th July 2008:
Dear Sir,
My name is John Brookes and I am the Chairman and Captain of the West Midlands Police Crown Green Bowling Section. We play our games at the Tally Ho! Sports and Conference Centre, Pershore Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham.
May I first of all say what a superb gesture you have made in giving the first team sponsorship to the Acorns Hospice in Birmingham. If only more of the top clubs and players would follow this generous example.
For the year 2009 we would like to put a little back into the community ourselves and we have decided to set up a junior academy for youngsters of any age across the city. We intend to hold coaching and competition events from week to week throughout the bowling season with members of our club volunteering to supply their services on a week to week basis.
We intend to approach both mainstream and special needs schools and other youth organisations to attract more young players to a sport which holds no discriminations as it can be played by both the able bodied and those not so fortunate. Long gone are the days when bowls was regarded as a single sex (male) sport in that current day players are of all ages and both genders.
As we are a self funding club, supported by the week to week donations of the bowlers we were wondering if Aston Villa might like to donate to the establishment of this youth academy. We have to purchase a number of sets of junior woods and jacks in order that the youngsters may use these from week to week when attending. We are not requesting anything specific as we are of the opinion that any help will do.
We would be proud to display any Aston Villa logo on our shirts; along with the police badge of course, to advertise our association with you should you wish to help us. This includes the senior sides.
I hope you do not mind us making this request but we do feel that without some financial help from a larger organisation we may not be able to cope with the finances of the project.
In the meantime I would like to wish you and all connected with the club every success for the coming season and many more to follow.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours Sincerely
John Brookes
Club Chairman
